A busy week.

Several bills are starting to make their way through the committee process.  The first major bill was on the House floor today.  This is a bill that would cut about $1 billion from spending to reduce the budget deficit.  The budget deficit is currently at $6.2 billion.

I voted against the bill because of my big concerns that it would significantly lead to higher property taxes and diminish city and county services.  There was over $480 million in cuts to communities around the state in the bill, a majority in rural Minnesota.

During the past month I had an intern helping me here in St. Paul.  He is Derek Ikeogu.  Derek lives in Wheaton and is a sophomore student at Gustavus Adolphus and majoring in political science.  He did a great job helping me with researching legislation, observing committees and preparing databases.  Derek is an outstanding young man who has great potential.  Today was Derek’s last day and I wish him the very best.  I would encourage all young students that are interested in government and politics that there are many great learning opportunities here at the Capitol.

Everyone have a great weekend!

Meeting with Moorhead Officials

I met this afternoon here in St. Paul with Moorhead City officials to talk about their efforts regarding this Spring’s flood prevention work and the requested funding for the next phase of the city’s flood mitigation projects.

We also discussed the importance of maintaining the Local Government Aid (LGA) program that helps keep property taxes down and essential services strong.  The city of Moorhead currently receives about $7.6 million in LGA.
